Sight words, often also called high frequency sight words, are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorise as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode

For a listing of sight words just type sight word list in your browser.

This week’s How-To

Make your own sight word cards at home.

What you will need:

  • Paper (colored paper if available)
  • Computer
  • Scissors
  • Sight Word List
  • Tape or glue

Instructions

  1. In a word document, make a table with two columns and six rows.
  2. Choose a standard font, such as Times New Roman and choose the biggest font size available.
  3. In each square of the table type in a sight word.
  4. Print out paper and cut out each rectangle.
  5. Post in various places around your home.

Try to use about four words per week, so that the child is not overwhelmed.  Each day point to the word, say the word, spell the word and say it again.  That’s it you’re done.  Now when you, your child or your child’s teachers reads a book, they can now identify the sight word they’ve been practicing at home.

Don’t want to use the computer? Just follow these easy steps with pencils, markers, a ruler and scissors.

Tip:  After each week when you are all done with a set of sight words and are moving on to another set of words, glue the old sight words to a poster board.  By the end of a month you will have created your very own Word Wall!!!!
