Centers Featured on CAN TV

In a recent interview on CAN TV, our Executive Director, Lakisha McFadden, shared insight into the interconnected challenges facing families across Chicago’s South Side and why addressing those challenges requires a holistic, wraparound approach grounded in community care.

Through our work at Centers for New Horizons, we see every day how the issues families face rarely occur in isolation. Housing instability, economic stress, and mental health challenges often appear together, creating a cycle of chronic stress that affects entire households. As Lakisha shared during the interview, oftentimes when one resource is unstable, “everything else in the household also seems unstable.”

This is why we have long been committed to a wraparound approach to care. Families may initially come to us for support with a single issue, but deeper conversations often reveal interconnected challenges. Economic stress can contribute to housing instability, which in turn impacts mental health and family dynamics. By supporting the whole household and connecting services across multiple areas, we work to help families build lasting stability and self-reliance.

Community-based organizations play a critical role in this work. Because we are rooted in the neighborhoods we serve, we are often trusted partners for families navigating difficult circumstances. That trust allows us to help families access resources, build stability, and move toward long-term self-reliance.

For more than 55 years, Centers for New Horizons has been part of this ecosystem of community care, helping families navigate challenges and build pathways to stability. Strengthening our communities requires recognizing how deeply connected these challenges are and ensuring that the resources exist to address them together.
