Stability in Practice: What It Takes to Help Children & Families Thrive

When we talk about helping children and families thrive, we often focus on outcomes. A child enters kindergarten ready to learn. A young person discovers a career path. A family finds the support they need during a difficult season.

Those outcomes matter. But they rarely happen because of one program or one moment of intervention. They are built over time.

At Centers for New Horizons, we think about that foundation as stability.

Stability can mean a safe, nurturing place for a young child to learn. It can mean a trusted adult who shows up consistently for a young person. It can mean a family having access to resources, relationships, and support when they need them most.

The common thread is that stability creates the conditions for people to move forward.

Stability Starts Early

For young children, stability begins with strong foundations.

At Centers, our early learning and family support programs help children develop the skills they need for lifelong learning while also supporting the families around them. In the past year, 108 children were served at our Altgeld Early Learning Center, while 175 families received support through High Risk Infant Follow-Up visits.

That work reflects an important truth: supporting a child also means supporting the people and circumstances surrounding that child.

Opportunity Is Part of Stability

As children grow, stability takes on a different form.

Young people need trusted relationships, opportunities to explore their interests, and experiences that help them imagine what comes next. Last year, more than 500 young people engaged across Centers' youth programs, including 341 who participated in summer experiences and 127 who participated in mentoring and after-school programming.

These experiences can do more than fill a child's time. They can build confidence, skills, relationships, and a sense of possibility.

Opportunity is part of stability because it gives young people something to build toward.

Stability Takes a Community

Families rarely experience challenges one at a time. Childcare, employment, housing, education, health, and financial security are deeply connected.

That is why lasting stability cannot be created by one organization alone.

Centers' community partnerships extend our reach beyond direct services, strengthening the systems and relationships families rely on. In the past year, those efforts impacted 1,297 educators and more than 2,600 community members.

For funders, partners, and community leaders, this is an important part of how we should think about impact. The question is not only, How many people did we serve?

It is also: What became possible because we were there?

Did a child gain a stronger foundation for learning? Did a young person discover an opportunity that changed how they saw their future? Did a family gain a connection that helped them navigate a difficult season?

Those outcomes may take time to see. But they are what stability looks like in practice.

Building What Comes Next

For 55 years, Centers has grown alongside Chicago's South Side, responding to community needs and building trusted pathways of support. As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to explore 55 years of impact and learn more about our 55th Anniversary Celebration.

As we celebrate that history, we also have to think about what comes next.

If we want stronger outcomes for children and families, we have to invest in more than individual interventions. We have to invest in relationships, opportunity, community partnerships, and the conditions that allow people to build stable futures.

Stability is built over time. It is built through partnership. And it is built by creating more opportunities for children and families to move forward with confidence.

That is the work. And it is work worth continuing.
